How we can help you to arrange repairs and improvements

Discussing options with caseworker What do our local teams offer?

Our aim is to use the expertise we have within our teams to take the burden of organising repair works away from you. We ensure that any works are carried out to a good standard and at a fair price.

If you’re not sure whether or not you can afford to pay for the repairs, or if you don’t know where to start with organising them, the first thing you should do is contact your local care & repair office.

Unless you just need simple advice and information over the telephone, for example the names of some reliable local builders, we will offer to visit you at home. Our caseworker will then go through all the details with you so that together you can agree a plan of action. This could include any or all of the following:

  • a visit from a technical officer who will advise on the extent of the work needed, draw up a schedule of work, prepare plans if necessary and apply for any permissions
  • advice on funding the work, including the availability of local authority grants and grants for heating and insulation and their eligibility criteria, a welfare benefits check (you might be entitled to more benefits), and other funding available from local or national organisations
  • help to fill in all the necessary paperwork
  • help to choose contractors and request quotations for the work.

Once you have chosen a contractor and work is underway our technical officer is available to mediate between you and the contractor should any problems arise (but does not clerk the works). When the work is finished our technical officer will inspect it before you pay any money to the contractor.

Please see our case studies for examples of the results achieved for people who needed repairs or improvements to their homes.
