New Foyer opens in Truro

Jane Stowey, CBE, Chief Executive of the Foyer Federation opened our latest Foyer in Truro.

The Foyer houses 12 young people aged between 16 and 25, and part of the ceremony featured three young residents explaining what a difference the Foyer has made to their lives. With great honesty and courage they told guests of their lives up to this point and went on to explain the outreach project they have helped to set up helping other young people in the area not as fortunate as them.

The building was a block of flats converted into 6, 2 bedroom apartments and one of our board members has personal recollections of the scheme as her son used to live in the flats.

Suzette Crossman, Foyer Manager says: “young people have enough on their plate without having to worry about where they live. The foyer gives them an opportunity to enjoy secure accommodation for up to 2 years and help them to improve their life skills. All residents have individual support programmes tailored to their particular needs and these programmes can include education and employment support and advice. foyer residents giving a speechBut it is not just us; we would not be able to provide the service without the support of other agencies and other organisations in the community.” She goes on to say: “our residents go out of their way to integrate with the local community and this adds to their learning experience.”

To top off the proceedings, lunch was prepared and served by young people from Jamie Oliver’s organisation, Fifteen Cornwall.
